Big Data for Business

What are the challenges of Big Data Analytics and its specificities in the context of business strategy?

How can we better understand the challenges of analyzing large volumes of structured, semi-structured, or unstructured data?

What are the main technological components of Big Data?

What are the infrastructure and project management requirements needed to implement successful data analytics projects?

The answers to these and other questions serve as the basis for developing an introductory program to Big Data. By the end of the Program, participants should be able to understand and apply Big Data Analytics techniques.

General Information

The course will take place at NOVA IMS, on October 1st and 2nd, 2024, at the Campolide Campus of NOVA University Lisbon. The training has a total duration of 16 hours.

Registrations

Registrations for this course are done online, through the NOVA IMS Application Portal.

Course Fee

The fee for this course is €1,450. Included are: coffee breaks, lunches, parking access, and the issuance of a Participation Certificate.

Payment for the course fee can be made in installments: 40% upon registration and 60% up to 2 weeks before the start of the course.

Language

This course will be taught in Portuguese.

The discounts below are not cumulative:

  • 10% for Students and Alumni (Bachelor's, Postgraduate, Master's, and Ph.D.) of NOVA University Lisbon, if paid individually;
  • 20% discount on registration for 5 people from the same company;

Module 2 - Big Data Technologies and Methods

Presentation of the technological context and main components: Hadoop, map/reduce. Introduction to HIVE and PIG.

Content

  • The new basic technologies for Big Data (Hadoop, Spark, and others);
  • The new information system architectures for Big Data;
  • Big Data and the evolution of analytical methods.
Module 3 - Processes and People

Objectives

Presentation of the analytical process and the main analytical profiles.

Content

  • The new profiles and competencies for Big Data (Data Scientist, Chief Data officer);
  • The new processes to take advantage of Big Data (Knowledge Discovery in Databases);
  • The impact of Big Data on Information Management as an asset - Big Data Data Governance.
Module 4 - Adoption and Case Studies

Presentation of Big Data case studies.

  • Maturity in the use of Big Data;
  • Big Data Use cases;
  • Strategies for the use of Big Data.
Module 5 - The Role of Big Data in Innovation

3 hours

Objectives

Presentation and definition of business processes based on big data analytics.

Content

  • Improvement of the relationship with the customer;
  • Improvement of the decision support process;
  • New Business Processes;
  • New Product and Service Development
Module 6 - Big Data, Security and Ethics

2 hours

Objectives

Key considerations in data security and privacy.

Content

  • Information security in the Big Data framework;
  • Big Data and ethics in the use of information;
  • Existing regulations for Big Data.
